CPI Quantum ‘a game changer for UK publishing’

CPI has printed what is believed to be the UK’s first trade book featuring fully integrated colour.

The special edition of Philippa Gregory’s Changeling, published today by Simon and Schuster, is the first colour trade book to be printed on CPI’s new QUANTUM, a combination of HP T350 digital colour web inkjet and Magnum Flexbook finishing technology. In a technical innovation, the vibrant colour images are integrated within the text rather than in separate plate sections.

CPI UK worked closely with the publishers to develop the colour edition of the 272pp hardback, to be sold exclusively through WHSmith. The eagerly anticipated title, first in the new young adult sequence Order of Darkness, contains brightly hued chapterhead illustrations and maps.

Cost effective, high quality, short run digital colour

David Hyde, production director at S&S, believes that the colour special edition produced by CPI creates new opportunities for publishers. “The ability to integrate colour images and text in printed form means that trade books are no longer restricted by plate sections,” he said. “This is a game changer for UK fiction publishing.”

He is particularly impressed by the quality made possible by the Quantum technology on the full range of book papers: “What CPI has achieved with HP is truly remarkable. They have enhanced the appeal of the physical book.”

CPI chief operating officer Ian Smith believes fully integrated colour adds value for both trade and STMA publishers. “Quantum gives us the flexibility to produce short to medium run books in mono, two colour or full colour, with no restriction on paper choice. It’s a unique offer.”

CPI Quantum offers cost effective, high quality, short run digital colour. It will be launched to publishers at an event in central London on 30 May.

Changeling by Philippa Gregory is published in hardback by Simon & Schuster, priced £12.99
