The CPI sales team have experienced a busy and very positive 2012 London Book Fair, after a full three days at Earl’s Court.

Highlights at this year’s fair include success for CPI on the Orange Prize shortlist and the announcement of a new children’s classics list from Random House, generating the printing of 40 new titles.

 
The shortlist for the Orange Prize for Fiction, the only annual book award for fiction written by a woman, was announced at the fair yesterday morning. Two of the featured titles are printed by CPI; congratulations go to Serpent’s Tail for Esi Edugyan’s Half Blood Blues and to Jonathan Cape for Anne Enright’s The Forgotten Waltz. The ebook for a third shortlisted title, Cynthia Ozick’s Foreign Bodies (Atlantic Books), was produced by CPI. The winner will be announced on 30 May – also the evening of the launch of CPI Quantum.
 
The LBF also saw the announcement of a new list for Random House’s Vintage imprint, to be printed by CPI. The Vintage Children’s Classics list features out-of-copyright classics such as Treasure Island alongside contemporary classics such as Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. The cut-down B-format books will be launched with 20 titles in August and a further 20 by the end of the year, with covers described as ‘works of art’.
 
The 41st London Book Fair was predicted to bring together 24,500 publishing professionals for rights negotiation and the sale and distribution of content, as well as meetings with suppliers, authors and colleagues. Over 1,500 international companies exhibited at this year’s fair, which this year focused on the Chinese publishing industry.

Academic publishers Oxford University Press visited CPI’s Croydon site today to watch cover printing and finishing processes in action.

Pictured are OUP’s Charley Mackintosh ( left) and Aoife Deasy (right), with CPI Sales Manager Darren Armstrong,  in front of CPI White Quill’s Speedmaster 75XL. The press is capable of printing 56,000 covers an hour and uses technology which ensures consistently accurate colour.

After a tour of the extensive press hall with White Quill general manager Mark Grice, the visitors were given a demonstration of cover finishing techniques, including foiling, laminating and embossing.
 

CPI UK is pleased to be a sponsor of World Book Night 2012. World Book Night is a celebration of reading and books which sees tens of thousands of passionate volunteers gift books in their communities to share their love of reading.
 
This year, World Book Night will be celebrated in the UK, Ireland, Germany and USA on April 23.

12 of the 25 specially chosen titles were printed by CPI UK in their thousands in World Book Night editions. Volunteer ‘givers’ will now give away copies to those who don’t regularly read to share and spread their love of reading. Each giver will receives 24 copies which they will pick up from their local bookshops and libraries in the week before April 23.

CPI is pleased to support the first Children’s Book Festival at Luton Hoo Walled Garden.

The event is the first literary festival especially for families and young people in Bedfordshire/Hertfordshire. It aims to provide a day of fun, frolics and all things bookish for the whole family. The festival is set in the magical Walled Gardens at Luton Hoo and themed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s book The Secret Garden. It involves a number of authors, illustrators and special events.

Independent publisher Choc Lit has scored two prizes at the Romantic Novelists’ Association’s (RNA) annual awards, the Ronas, while Katie Fforde’s Summer of Love won the Contemporary Romantic Novel award. All three books were printed by CPI.

Choc Lit took home two accolades, with Highland Storms by Christina Courtenay winning the Historical Romantic Award, and Jane Lovering’s Please Don’t Stop the Music winning Romantic Comedy.

Fforde’s story of countryside passions (Century) beat titles by Freya North and Jill Mansell among others, to the Contemporary Romantic Novel award at last night’s ceremony in central London, while Rosie Thomas’ decade-spanning The Kashmir Shawl (HarperCollins) won the Epic Romantic Novel category.

Piccadilly Press won the inaugural Young Adult Romantic Award for Caroline Green’s Dark Ride.

“In the big sky of romantic fiction today’s winners are among the brightest stars,” said Annie Ashurst, RNA Chair. “Their talent, diversity and commitment are awe inspiring and we congratulate them all on their success.”

Each category winner will now go on to form the shortlist for the Romantic Novel of the Year Award, which will be announced on 17th May.

Sarah Mallory’s The Dangerous Lord Darrington (Mills & Boon) won the Rona Rose Award for category and shorter romance, while the Harry Bowling Prize for unpublished authors, worth £1,000, went to Natalie Lloyd-Evans for A Dark Flowering, and runner-up Aline P’Nina Taya took home £100 for Island of Dreams.

Karin Stocker, editorial director for Harlequin Mills & Boon from 1994-2011, was given the RNA’s Outstanding Achievement Award.

Independent publisher Choc Lit’s success comes in the week when the Independent Publishers Guild celebrated its 50th annual conference. The event was attended by CPI representatives Martin McCall and Sandra Terlevic.
