• Workshops for self publishers

Would you like to know more about preparing your manuscript for publication? Have you ever wanted to see how a book is printed and bound? Do you have questions about how to go about designing your book and making it as cost-effective as possible?

In association with the Winchester Writers’ Conference, CPI Antony Rowe offers a programme of workshops for self-publishers. Here, you’ll meet experts in writing for publication and book manufacturing, as well as being able to share experiences with fellow self-publishers.

The purpose of the workshops is to introduce authors who wish to self-publish to the requirements and costs of the publishing process – and to help authors develop a manuscript that will meet the requirements of the marketplace.

Subjects covered in the workshops include:

    • Identifying your readership and preparing your manuscript
    • Making your book reader-friendly
    • Designing and printing your book
    • Marketing considerations

The workshops are presented by Mrs Barbara Large, Senior Lecturer in the Centre for Research and Knowledge Exchange at the University of Winchester, and Geoff Fisher, Sales Manager at CPI UK. Barbara is the founder of the Winchester Writer’s Conference, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2011. Geoff has spent many years in publishing and printing and will discuss design and production considerations, as well as leading a tour of the book manufacturing facilities.

The feedback from authors attending the workshops is overwhelmingly positive, with many emailing their comments in praise of the experience:

“I really enjoyed the workshop and the friendly informal way that it is held. I learnt a lot about the self-publishing process.”

“Very good to meet professionals who were able to give an insight into book production.”

“The small group and the informal atmosphere made me comfortable. Barbara and Geoff were very helpful, in answering questions and making themselves accessible, even after the workshop. It is also good to meet others in a similar situation and to listen to the experience of other self-publishers.”

“…  a very enjoyable day filled with useful information.”

“The coverage by Barbara and Geoff was excellent. The tour around the factory was the ‘icing on the cake’ absolutely fascinating.”

“I’ve gained a great insight into the production and promotion of my next title.”
